IEP / 504 / Educational Advocacy Meetings

As a former special education teacher, I know how confusing the jargon, advocacy, and determining the needed accommodations and modifications can be. This service allows us to meet once prior to the meeting to review present levels of performance, concerns the school has shared with you, concerns you have for your child’s educational plan, setting (LRE), or needs you feel are not being met. Sometimes having someone to advocate for you, based on what you want for child and what is best for your child, helps you feel confident you are helping them obtain those services. It is challenging to advocate for your child when you are being met with resistance or feel you do not know how, so having a specific approach to discussing those needs in the best interest of your child helps the meetings run more smoothly and encourages more prompt action. This applies to all ages and stages, whether your child with perceived additional needs is entering Pre-K, transitioning from elementary to middle or middle to high or high to post-secondary, there are accommodations and modifications available to them and I can help with advocating for the ones that would be most appropriate based on what they receive routinely in class or have been professionally advised they need. These meetings can certainly be led by you, the parent, and the school staff present and myself can serve as a support as needed throughout the meeting and process.

*One meeting with parents and child (if appropriate) where all documentation and needs/desires are discussed that allows us to make a plan of action for the meeting is required one week prior to the meeting date. This allows time to discuss any changes and make sure I have all the information I need prior to the meeting. I need at least TWO weeks notice of the meeting date so I have time to make changes in my schedule if needed.
