These sessions will only be focused on the selected skill that is most urgent. Strong fluency skills are required for strong comprehension so if fluency has not been mastered, we would focus on fluency. I will use my own passages for our sessions and provide a weekly passage for home practice. The passages for building fluency or comprehension, if the student is not currently reading at grade level, should not be homework or a text being read as a class since that is not their independent reading level and likely causes frustration rather than building confidence. This helps us complete a passage together each time we meet. Depending on student level, we may begin with highly decodable passages. Comprehension will be included in Fluency sessions but will not be the focus until fluency is mastered.
*A minimum of one, 50 minute session is required each week for fluency and/or comprehension tutoring sessions each week with the expectation a passage will be worked on with a parent or older sibling (younger learners) for correction as needed or idependently for older learners only being reviewed with a parent once per week. If the family cannot commit to this, a minimum of two sessions is required. Consistency is a significant part of reading success.
